WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last set of teeth to develop. They typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people have four wisdom teeth- two on the top and two on the bottom.

While some people have enough room in their mouths for their wisdom teeth to grow properly, others may experience problems that require their removal.

Why do they cause problems?

While wisdom teeth do develop normally for some, they are often problematic. The main reason is that they don’t have enough room in our jaw to accommodate them, and this can lead it to become crooked and can erupt through gums at strange angles. Hence if left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to complications like infection, damage to adjacent teeth and bone, gum diseases, and even cysts.

Even those that are completely erupted can cause problems like decay, infection, or gum diseases because of their location at the very back of the mouth, which makes it difficult to clean.

Signs that you need your wisdom tooth extracted?
Ideally, it’s better to get them removed before experiencing any pain/discomfort as they grow in.

Some of the signs and symptoms that you may experience are:

  • Pain or tenderness
  • Stiff and achy jaw
  • Swollen inflamed gums
  • Bad breath
  • Swelling and difficulty in opening mouth

What to expect on the Day of Surgery?

Wisdom tooth removal is basically an outpatient procedure, which is usually done under Local Anesthesia, which will keep you out of pain. It takes around 45min-90 minutes, basically depending on the type, number, and angulation of the wisdom tooth. If the idea of staying awake during the procedure makes you very anxious, then conscious sedation can be given, which keeps you relaxed and drowsy during the treatment.

Post-operative Care

  • Take the prescribed medications- antibiotics and pain killer
  • Avoid anything hot for 24 hours
  • Have soft foods for the first few days
  • Maintain good oral hygiene- brush with care near the area to avoid dislodging the clot
  • Avoid vigorous swishing and gargling
  • Avoid smoking and straw
  • Avoid probing the area with a finger or tongue
  • Limit high-impact activity- take rest for the first few days
  • Use an icepack outside the cheek, which helps in reducing the swelling

Wisdom tooth removal is a common dental procedure and complications are rare. For a successful recovery, it's important to properly follow the post-operative instructions given to you by your doctor.
